Growing Sweet Peas

We are growing sweet peas in Year 1. We are learning about the different parts of plants.

Before the Easter holiday we planted some sweet pea seeds. Now we are watching them grow!

Above the soil we can see the plants sprouting. They have tiny, green leaves on them.

We looked at what was happening underneath the soil...

We can see the sprout at the top and the root growing down under the soil.

Hopefully we will see our plants get more leaves, and even some pretty flowers!

Investigation Stations

Year 1 are learning about Materials in Science this term.

We started by naming the different materials that are found in our environment, and had a think about what different objects were made from.

This week we looked at lots of different objects and used our scientific skills to sort the objects by the material they were made from. Some of the objects were not made of the material that we first thought!

What material do you these these objects are made from?

Skipton Castle in the Snow!

Year 1 had a wonderful trip to Skipton Castle today. We braved the cold and the snow to learn about some of the history in the local area.

We explored all over the castle and heard all about its history from our superb guides. We learned all about how kitchens were run in medieval times (no girls allowed!) and about what the toilets were like (very smelly!). We also went deep down into the dungeons and saw how dark it was for the prisoners that were kept there.
Ask us all about our fabulous experience, and enjoy the pictures from our trip.

All of us could fit into the fireplace!

This is the dungeon...with the lights on...
 and with the lights off!
We leaned about how knights guarded the entrance to the castle using a drawbridge, murder holes, gates and a portcullis.

We are looking forward to continuing our learning about castles this half term.

Fraction Finders

Year 1 have been learning about fractions. Today we have been folding shapes to find two equal parts. Look at our hard work!

Myles folded this triangle in half. He told me "I know that it is half because there are two equal pieces."
Super reasoning skills, Myles!

Pointillism Penguins

We have been using our Art skills this half term.
We looked at the work of George Seurat and how he used dots to create his Pointillism paintings.
We practised using different equipment to create the dots. Next we sketched our penguins.
This week we used our skills to paint our penguins.
